Measurement Guide

In order to adjust the TMD Relief according to the morphological needs of the patient, it is necessary to correctly perform the measurement process of some fundamental values.

The values that you need to measure are:

1. The maximum opening capacity of the mouth (assisted and unassisted)
2. The lateral excursion
3. The overlap
4. The protrusion
5. The opening route

The measurement of the same values throughout the course of therapy allows the monitoring of the progress pursued, on the basis of which it will be possible to update the regulation of the device.

Once the measurements have been taken, you can then move on to device adjustment.

1. Maximum assisted and non-assisted opening

Measure with the ruler supplied in the package the following three measurements: The opening of the mouth without force and pain; the forced opening of the mouth (in total autonomy of the patient); the forced opening of the mouth (with assistance of a health care professional).

Here, opening movements are free movement without pain.

The value of the painless opening indicates the patient’s ability to open the mouth effortlessly, i.e. without feeling any discomfort.

The value of the painless opening is extremely important for the regulation of TMD Relief.

This value must be used as reference for the setting the maximum opening of the instrument at the end of the stroke. (That is the distance between the two silicone supports to protect the blades from the “unloading” instrument).

Here, opening movements are movement with maximum possible mouth opening without assistance.

Finally, the maximum assisted mouth openig must be measured.

2. Side excursion

In relationto the maxillary incisor, draw a horizontal line on the opposite mandibular incisor, using the incisal end of the maxillary incisor as guide.

If the midline of the mandibular and maxillary incisors is lower or equals 1 mm of deviation, these midlines are acceptable reference points for measurements of the lateral excursion.

If the midline of the mandibular and maxillary incisors should be higher than 1 mm, mark the midlines for reference.

Alternatively, you can mark a line on the faces of the maxillary and mandibular incisors.
